Why having a Christian Worldview of History is Imporant
Having a Christian Worldview is very important when it comes
to studying history. Having this kind of
a mindset does not mean that you must only study events that are Christian
focus. A Christian Worldview reminds us that “The Bible provides principles of
ethics that guide our evaluation of people and nations.[1]”
This is extremely important because we want to make sure that we are studying
the past not with the bias of today but looking through the lens of history so
we can see how these people truly lived.
We must also remember to keep a strong and true “Commitment
to objectivity and honesty is essential to historical investigation.[2]”
We must remain honest in our study of history. To many times it is said that “history
is written by the victors.” But as historians we need to do justice to all the
people in the past because their stories are just as important has those who
were victorious.
One historian that I feel does a great job of being an unbiased
historian is Giles Milton. While I am not sure if he is a Christian or not, he
does the job of looking at history through the lens. He does amazing research
when it comes to the books or podcasts that he does. He will try and speak with
people who were there, dig through the national archives to make sure that he
builds a full and accurate picture of what he is researching. Which that kind
of work benefits us his readers.
Augustine of Hippo is someone else that I look up to after
doing research about him. He studied and wrote about many topics not just on
religion or history. He was a man that gave a blueprint on how to have a
Christian Worldview when it comes to history.
A man that does not have a Christian Worldview and a
historian to stay away from would “Band of Brothers” author
Stephen Ambrose. During his lifetime he wrote many books that would bring him
fame. But he did not have an ethical view of history or himself. Because on
many occasions he was accused of plagiarism and making up interviews that did
not happen. It is historians like Ambrose that end up leading to people not
getting the correct view of history.
I understand that I have my bias but when it comes to
studying and writing about history I plan to keep a Christian Worldview so I
can keep an ethical and moral view of the subject that I am studying.
